Hi there, I'm Jen
Welcome to the Blog
Designer, SEO Expert, transplant advocate,
and adventure addict.
One of the easiest Showit SEO tips is to add keyword-rich blog category descriptions. Here’s why it matters, and how to do it without overthinking!
(aka: How to use blog categories to boost SEO without even writing a new post)
If you’ve got a blog on Showit, odds are you’ve heard people talk about how blogging is great for SEO. And yes! it totally is!! But how you blog matters.
So I have one super quick actionable step for you today, to help you improve your site’s visibility. We’re going to be looking at your blog categories. Seriously, this part of your site gets overlooked all the time! But the blog categories page (yep, the one that automatically displays all your posts by topic) is prime real estate for SEO.
Why? Because each category page is its own indexable page on your site. That means Google sees it. And if it’s blank or just says “Showing posts in category: travel,” you’re wasting an opportunity to get more eyes on your content!
Your categories section is very easy to access, from your WordPress Dashboard just choose “posts” and then select the “category” tab under posts. It will bring up your category screen similar to this (but yours may look a little different – you probably won’t have all the wording I am showing here under each category, but, that’s why we’re here, to fix that – yay!)

Then open the category you want to work on by clicking on the name, or “edit” just below it when you hover over the category title. It will open up the category to look like this –

Form there you will just fill in the information and content. I recommend starting with choosing a good keyphrase (more on that specifically coming soon!) and going below to fill in the Yoast box first.
Head back to your WordPress dashboard page real quick and choose the tab “plugins” then where you see the Yoast SEO Plugin, click “activate” you can just use the free version – after that is ready you can go back to your dashboard, and navigate back to your blog categories.
For the Yoast box you’ll put in your keyphrase, then your SEO title, slug, and Meta description. Then head to the top of the edit category section to fill in your Category name, slug, and description. *I recommend making sure your yoast box slug and upper category box slug are the same here, just to be sure.
For the description box put your keyphrase at the top, and then your meta below that, and then expand upon your category below those to add more wording and content (google loves content! haha) That’s it! You can add a photo if you’d like (use your keyphrase in the image name too!) and then hit update at the very bottom, and move onto the next one.
This is the kind of SEO I love! Small tweaks that make a big impact. Adding a short, keyword-friendly paragraph to each of your blog category descriptions can help search engines understand what your site is about. Even better, it helps humans navigate your content too.
Think of it like this:
If someone stumbles across your “Travel Tips” category, what would help them know they’re in the right place? A quick sentence or two that gives them the vibe of what they’ll find goes a long way.
You don’t need to be a copywriter or an SEO pro. Just write like you’re chatting with a client or travel buddy and be clear about what the section is for. That’s it.
I actually do a free, NO sales, quarterly session for female business owners, kind of like a virtual lunch and learn. No slideshows. No sales pitch. Just real talk and smart, doable tips to help you use your blog better.
Whether you’re a travel planner, destination business, or creative entrepreneur with a Showit site, you’re more than welcome to join! Grab the details here.
Let’s make your content work smarter, not harder.
